Customs Rules

Used Personal effects:

Nepalese Customs rules are quite simple for used personal effects shipments which are broadly catagorized as follows :

Diplomatic shipment: are allowed into Nepal without opening of the goods and with out any duty payment.

Duty free privileged shipments: are for officials working in embassy having non diplomatic status and for people working in projects are allowed duty free status (depending upon their project's contracts with Govt of Nepal ). These shipments are allowed duty free but can be checked by the customs.

Non duty free shipments: Personnel having resident visa and/or work visa in Nepal but NOT having Diplomatic or duty free status have to obtain an "import permit" from the Department of Commerce which can take upto 2 weeks for processing and involve import permit fee and other charges in addition to the import duty and taxes at Kathmandu airport / Indo-Nepal Land border customs.

As all electronics (including computers) are dutiable it is preferred that the client does NOT bring his old electronics in Nepal. If he must bring, then we request that we are given a list of electronics so that we can advice the duty amount and the client can decide to or not to bring those to Nepal.

In Nepal all major brands (and good Chinese brands also) are available at very reasonable rates.

Goods of daily use such as clothes, books, some furniture, musical instruments, kitchenware/glass & china are allowed duty free.

Used Pre-owned Automobiles

BASIC RULE : USED CARS ARE NOT ALLOWED INTO NEPAL .

ONLY DIPLOMATS ARE ALLOWED TO IMPORT THEIR USED VEHICLES PROVIDED FOLLOWING CONDITIONS ARE FULLFILLED :

1) The Embassy requests Ministry of Foreign Affairs for  a pre-approval for import of the used vehicle based on the documents of the car ( Certificate of at least Euro 4 compliance, Invoice, Packing list , Certificate of Origin, Owner's passport photopage, Appointment letter etc)

2) Once the approval is received the client can then ship his vehicle to Nepal via Kolkatta port

3) The vehicle has to be shipped in a 20' container and for a duty free clearance of the vehicle a diplomatic/duty free clearance from MFA is needed for which the diplomat has to obtain a diplomatic card , this process can take up between 3-6 weeks thus the timing of the shipment has to be adjusted accordingly in order to avoid any container rent /port rent at Kolkatta port.

3) IMPORTANT :

The vehicle can not be sold/left behind in Nepal, the diplomat will have to re-export the used vehicle out of Nepal once the work tenure is over.
